Benefits, Traditional Uses & Scientific Interest
Kidney and urinary wellness
Palo Azul has traditionally been prepared for kidney and urinary concerns. Scientific studies have investigated several aspects of that use, including urine production, mineral crystal formation, and the response of kidney tissue to injury.
Urinary flow research
Studies found that a water-based Palo Azul bark extract increased urine volume compared with untreated controls. This supports scientific interest in its traditional diuretic use. Increased urination, and better kidney function.
Antioxidant activity and kidney protection research
In a 2025 study, researchers examined Palo Azul extracts and isolated compounds called Coatline B and Matlaline. They reported antioxidant activity and reduced kidney tissue damage following an experimentally interrupted blood supply. These findings highlight potential protective mechanisms worth further study.
Mineral crystal research
Laboratory research found that isolated Palo Azul isoflavones slowed the formation and growth of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate crystals—minerals involved in some urinary stones. This offers another explanation for researchers’ interest in the plant’s traditional urinary uses.
